Year 3 STEM Week 2022

During STEM week, Year 3 carried out Mathematical investigations to practice using systematical ways of thinking, problem solving and reasoning skills. These investigations were linked to their unit of work, money. They had to work as a team to find the different solutions. We also used lolly sticks and cups to engineer different structures. We had to work in a team to think critically and to use our design skills.

During the week, we conducted Science experiments in groups. We had to see whether we could dye flowers. We found out that the Xylem of the flower works like a lift and brings the water from the cup all the way up the plant’s stem and into the plant’s petals. When it brings the dyed water up it ends up dying the plant’s petals. The Xylem is what allows the plant to get water from the roots all the way to the petals.

Likewise, we investigated whether we could make art with milk and washing up liquid. We found out that milk has fat in it and the food colouring floats on top of the fat. The fat is all connected with bonds. Dish soaps are used on greasy or oily dishes because it breaks the bonds in fats allowing them to separate. When you add the dish soap to the milk, the fat separates and moves making your magical milk art.

On Friday, children dressed up as their future STEM careers. For example, we had a vet, doctor, train engineer and many more excellent job aspirations.
