Year 5 Brogdale Farm

On Tuesday 28th June, year 5 travelled to Faversham to visit Brogdale Farm. Brogdale is the home of the National Fruit Collection, a living museum of the history and heritage of fruit.  We explored the orchards where there are over 2,200 varieties of apples and found the oldest variety, the Decio, that was brought to the UK by the Romans!  We discussed the life cycle of trees and how they have adapted to their environment and discovered how the staff at Brogdale maintain the trees and keep them healthy.  We also visited the weather station, wildlife garden and music garden where we identified clouds and wildflowers - and made a lot of noise!

It was a fantastic day in the sunshine and best of all, we spent some time in the cherry orchard.  Brogdale has over 300 different types of cherries and as they were in season, we were able to sample one of the commercial varieties direct from the trees.  They were deep red, plump and delicious!
